Eola-Amity Hills AVA

| Chehalem Mountains AVA | Dundee Hills AVA | Eola-Amity Hills AVA | McMinnville AVA | Ribbon Ridge AVA | Yamhill-Carlton District AVA |

  • Stretches from the town of Amity in the north to Salem in the south
  • Adjacent to the Willamette River, these hills are composed of the Eola Hills, straddling the 45th parallel on the southern end and the Amity Hills on the northern spur
  • The Eola-Amity Hills area benefits from steady winds off the Pacific Ocean that reach the Willamette Valley through the Van Duzer corridor, a gap in the Oregon Coast Range (helps to moderate summer temperatures)
  • The soils of the Eola Hills contain predominantly volcanic basalt from ancient lava flows, combined with marine sedimentary rocks and/or alluvial deposits
  • Generally much shallower and rockier set of well drained soils which produce small grapes with great concentration
  • Predominant grape cultivated is Pinot noir
  • Also see Chardonnay, Pinot gris, and Pinot blanc and smaller quantities of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Gewürtztraminer, Sauvignon blanc, and Gamay
  •  The name Eola is a tribute to the windy conditions in the area, and is derived from Aeolus, the Greek god of wind
