- The average temperature is relatively cool and rainfall is low, creating a shorter growing season
- An abundance of south facing slopes that provide the conditions for air movement ensuring the absence of frost during bud break and at harvest
- The sandy loam volcanic soil provides good water drainage
- Current production is led by hardy grapes such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Chardonnay
- The climate also supports the production of ice wine
- Some warmer microclimates within the area can also support different types of grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
